Ramaiah Intellectual Property Rights Cell (RCIPR) was inaugurated on 29th January 2019 by Dr. T. Ramakrishna, Professor of Law, Chair Professor (IPR), National Law School of India University Bengaluru. Dr. Arkalgud Ramaprasad, Director Public Policy Centre and Prof. S Subramanian, Secretary KSCST presided over the Function. The centre was established in collaboration with the Karnataka State Council for Science and Technology (KSCST) to create awareness and management of Intellectual Property (IP) among the Ramaiah Group of Institutions and enable an innovation-oriented research ecosystem and provoke necessary aid, guidance and support to facilitate the protection of various intellectual properties.
A Day workshop on Intellectual Property Rights for the Research and teaching faculty and Staff of all Institutions under the Group. The workshop ensured the dissemination of information on fostering a culture of innovative research among the academic fraternity and the importance of intellectual property protection to the staff and members of faculty of different Ramaiah intuitions.
The workshop was organised by considering the diverse needs of each discipline/department by bifurcating the workshop into 3 parallel sessions and dividing the Faculty/ disciplines / Departments of the various intuitions into three groups:
The workshop focused on aspects pertaining to the patentability of medical innovations, hands-on sessions on the patenting procedure and prior art search, Understanding Copyright Protection Procedure, trademark Protection Procedure, geographical indications, and IP management commercialisation along with IP Portfolio Management, IP Securitisation and IP Audit, Software Patenting, Telecommunication and Engineering Innovations and IP Strategy. 118 participants attended the workshop from various departments of Ramaiah institutions.
A project titled ‘An Exploratory Study into the Problems and Prospects of Bidriware & Authorised Users Drive for the Registration of Bidriware Artisans under the Geographical Indication of Goods (Registration & Protection) Act, 1999’. was taken up by Ramaiah Centre for Intellectual Property Rights in August 2019 as a part of the MOU between RIPRC and Visvesvaraya Trade Promotion Centre (VTPC), Department of Industries & Commerce, Government of Karnataka to identify the problems faced by the artisans of Bidriware Handicraft from the Bidar District of Karnataka. The exploratory study was undertaken to identify the social, economic and legal problems faced by the artisans of Bidriware and provide futuristic solutions and suggestions to the Government of Karnataka, to facilitate the welfare of the artisans and the craft. During the course of the research, the artisans traditionally practising the craft were identified and provided with the necessary legal aid from RCIPR and Financial aid from VTPC to facilitate their registration as Authorised Users under the geographical indications of Goods (Registration and Protection) Act, 1999.
As a part of the World Intellectual Property Day 2019, RCIPR in Association with KSCST and CIPAM celebrated IP Week and conducted various competitions and workshops to spread awareness about various dimensions of intellectual property to various stakeholders and the public. A quiz competition, Poster making competition, treasure hunt, debate competition and photography competitions were conducted among students from various Ramaiah institutions and the winners were awarded prize money in recognition of their achievements.
A one-day state level workshop was organised on Intellectual property and Sports on 27th April, 2019 with regard to the WIPO theme for IP Day 2019. The workshop disseminated information about the relevance of Intellectual Property in the Sports arena. It focused on sensitising those working and interacting with various sporting events and activities about IP they deal with during the course of activities. The workshop was attended by Physical education Directors / Instructors of various institutions/ universities across Karnataka and other stakeholders. The workshop covered different aspects of Intellectual property rights and sports industry including Technological Innovations in Sports Arena, Trademark in sports and Copyright in sports.
An IP Run, “Track for IP “was organised on 29th April 2019 from RCIPR to KSCST and back by the students and the staff of KSCST in order to increase public awareness about the importance of Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) in promoting innovation, creativity, and economic growth. It also aimed at increasing community engagement by bringing together individuals from diverse backgrounds to participate in an innovative and educational event.
A one-day workshop was organised for the Post Graduate Students of Life Sciences from Ramaiah College of Arts, Science and Commerce on 30th April 2019 as part of the IP week celebrations. The workshop focused on providing insights into the regulatory landscape specific to the life sciences industry and its impact on IP management. The workshop was divided into different sessions on patentability of innovations in the life sciences industry.
A two-day training program was conducted on 17th and 18th June 2019 in collaboration with Karnataka State Council for Science & Technology (KSCST) and Cell for IPR Promotion and Management (CIPAM), Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade, Ministry of Commerce & Industry, Government of India as a part of induction and training for the newly appointed IP Coordinators of IPR Committees/ IP Committees / Innovation cells etc of Ramaiah Group of Institutions. The training program was conducted to make the institutions self-sufficient in coordination of matters pertaining to filing of patent applications etc. The session was divided into 2 days where different subject matter experts conducted training on Patentability Criteria, Indian Patent Filing Process, Prior art / novelty Search, IP Schemes and National IP Policy, IP Management and protection of IP for Academic Institutions. 43 participants from across different institutions and departments of Ramaiah Institutions took part in the training program.
